“We, deputies of the Ternopil Regional Council, ask the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to return to ethnic Ukrainians and representatives of national minorities of Ukraine the right to have a record of nationality in state registration documents. As a legislative initiative, introduce to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine a bill on restoring the “nationality” column in a passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, adoption certificate, death certificate, child birth application, marriage application and other registration documents.”
As previously reported, deputies already submitted a corresponding bill in 2013. Then a similar initiative was made by parliamentarians Valery Patskan (“UDAR”), Andriy Shevchenko (“Batkivshchyna”), Bohdan Benyuk (VO “Svoboda”) and non-factional Oleg Kanevets. However, the bill did not find support from the parliamentary majority.
Human rights activists fear that Svoboda's initiative may be aimed at inciting hatred based on nationality.
