This was stated by Russian political scientist Andranik Migranyan, speaking on January 11 at a seminar at the Center for National Interests (Washington), quoted by an American analytical publication The National Interest.
“According to Migranyan, who has good connections in the highest echelons of Russian government, the prevailing opinion among the Moscow elite is that the Minsk agreements do not apply. Kyiv has no intention of fulfilling its part of the agreement, and the problem is further aggravated by Washington's decision to supply weapons to the Ukrainian authorities. Therefore, escalation of the conflict may become the only real option for Russia,” the publication writes.
The political scientist believes that now Russia may again escalate the conflict, as the United States begins to supply weapons to Ukraine.
“Ukraine is not a vital problem for the United States; Ukraine is a vital problem for Russia,” Migranyan noted. “The United States will lose in any conflict at any level because Russia, operating in its own backyard, is willing to take every opportunity to protect its positions and interests.”
He warns that if Moscow's position in Ukraine is seriously threatened, Russia may resort to open intervention.
“The supply of lethal weapons, leading to an escalation of the conflict, could push Moscow to openly intervene in order to solve this problem, which has existed for a long time, and was not radically resolved in 2014,” Migranyan said.
At the same time, he clarified that he was expressing exclusively his opinion.
