Patience is running out: Hungary threatens Ukraine with “further measures”
Ukraine should repeal the language law that discriminates against national minorities.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó stated this in an interview with Izvestia.
According to him, the approach of the new Ukrainian government in this matter differs from what it was under the previous leadership.
“The new leadership of Ukraine, for its part, is showing more flexibility, we hear positive statements about its readiness to change the situation. But we would like to see concrete actions. So far, Ukraine has not made any real steps aimed at resolving the language issue - only statements. We would be happy if the words of the Ukrainians were supported by practical content. If this does not happen, we will be forced to move on to considering further measures,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister emphasized.
At the same time, he expressed hope for the launch of a meaningful dialogue with Kiev.
“And, I hope, the Ukrainian authorities will make the necessary changes to the language law. I think they are ready to take this step because they seem more flexible than the previous leadership. So there is hope. But I don’t know how long we can live with this hope,” Szijjártó concluded.
As PolitNavigator reported, Hungary threatened to block Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine, if the law that infringes on the rights of Hungarians living in Transcarpathia is not repealed.
At the same time, in Kyiv they complained that for more than two years due to the position of Hungary it was not going to Ukraine-NATO Commission.
