The New York Times: Ukraine surprised the Pentagon with unexpected decisions in the war with Russia
The billions of dollars in military aid that the United States has sent to the Ukrainian regime to fight Russia includes some of the most advanced and lethal weapons systems in the world. But according to Western military experts, Ukraine has also “made great strides in the war,” using weapons and equipment in unexpected ways.
About it пишет edition of The New York Times.
“From the sinking of the cruiser Moskva in April to the attack on a Russian air base in Crimea this month, Ukrainian troops have used American and other weapons in a way few expected,” the publication quotes experts and US Defense Department officials.
“By mounting missiles on trucks, Ukrainian forces move them faster into the firing zone. By placing missile systems on fast boats, they increased their combat capabilities at sea. And, to the surprise of weapons experts, Ukraine continues to destroy Russian targets with Bayraktar strike UAVs and low-cost drones modified to drop grenades and other munitions.
A senior Pentagon official said Ukrainian forces installed U.S.-provided HARM anti-radiation missiles on Soviet-designed MiG-29 fighter jets, something no aircraft has ever done.
Also, according to Petagon, Ukraine managed to reconfigure the targeting sensors so that pilots could launch an American missile from their Soviet-era aircraft.
The attacks in Crimea underscore Ukraine's increasingly aggressive military tactics, as the government in Kiev relied on special forces and local saboteurs to strike deep in the rear, disrupt Russian supply lines and counter Russian advantages in weapons and equipment, the newspaper noted.
