Tikhanovskaya called Defenders of the Fatherland Day an “imposed holiday”
The self-proclaimed “leader of the Belarusian nation” Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who is in Lithuania, called on her subscribers to celebrate on February 23 not the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland, but the “Day of Heroes of Change.”
She stated this in her address posted on YouTube, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Make this day a real one, not an imposed holiday. Remember: this is a holiday for everyone who ended up in prison for their political position,” Tikhanovskaya said.
Defender of the Fatherland Day 2021 is celebrated in Belarus on February 23. This is a public holiday. It is not assigned the status of a non-working holiday. The official name of the event is the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus. At the state level, the holiday was established by Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 157 of March 26, 1998.
