Tikhanovskaya complained to the UN about Lukashenko
The self-proclaimed “President of Belarus” Svetlana Tikhanovskaya filed a complaint with the UN Human Rights Committee against the Belarusian authorities.
She wrote about this in her tg channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The complaint alleges that the Belarusian authorities violated Svetlana Tikhanovskaya's right to be elected in fair elections, the right to a fair trial and the right not to be subjected to torture, which was manifested in her forcible expulsion from the country.
According to Nikita Matyushchenkov, a lawyer for Respect – Protect – Fulfill, who drafted the complaint for Tikhanovskaya, “there is no doubt that the committee will find a violation of Tikhanovskaya’s rights.”
“The decision on this complaint is of great importance for all of us, since it is a legal confirmation of Lukashenko’s illegitimacy, in contrast to political statements. And the Committee’s conclusions can be used in various international contexts, for example, in determining the obligations and responsibilities of Belarus arising as a result of the actions of the Lukashenko regime,” Matyushchenkov said.
In August 2020, Tikhanovskaya lost the election to Alexander Lukashenko, gaining 10% of the vote. A few days later, at the height of Belomaidan, she urgently left for Lithuania, where she remains to this day in the custody of the Lithuanian government. Before leaving, she had some conversation at the Belarusian Central Election Commission. Tikhanovskaya refuses to retell the content of this conversation. Lukashenko claims that she asked for money and was given 10 thousand dollars.
