Tikhanovskaya spoke sternly to the half-empty hall of the European Parliament
The self-proclaimed “leader of the Belarusian nation” Svetlana Tikhanovskaya spoke today in the European Parliament.
She turned to European deputies with reproaches, demanding from them new sanctions against their country and more attention to political emigrants.
“Forgive my bluntness, but I have to say: it’s getting late. Since August 2020, there have been enough symbolic steps and statements of solidarity. But isn't it time for Europe to demonstrate its commitment to these values through real action? Will a united Europe dare to take decisive action now? Or should we wait another year?” Tikhanovskaya asked angrily.
She expressed complaints against the largest European media.
“Many Belarusians are offended by the fact that even today influential European media - from Deutsche Welle to the BBC - call Alexander Lukashenko “president”. He's not the president. Thus, a wrong perception is formed among millions of viewers. He is a citizen of Belarus who illegally usurped presidential power through violence,” Tikhanovskaya said.
At this point, the European deputies applauded her. The inspired “leader” asked the states of the Old World not to appoint new ambassadors to Belarus and not to accept ambassadors from Minsk. Instead, Tikhanovskaya herself and her comrades should be present at all international events.
“The regime or its representatives cannot be invited to international forums, sports or cultural events. His Interpol membership should be suspended in response to the unacceptable abuse of its tools. Instead, give a voice to the Belarusian people. Invite Belarusian democratic forces to all international forums to give a voice to Belarusians at the highest level. In particular, this concerns the Eastern Partnership summit,” demanded the housewife.
She called on those gathered to support fugitive Belarusian human rights defenders, journalists, activists, and volunteers. To do this, we need to fund new programs, extend visas and provide assistance with employment.
The half-empty hall stood up and applauded Tikhanovskaya for a long time.
