TikTok is gradually removing content about protests in Russia
The Valdai Club hosted a discussion about the possibilities of regulating the activities of social networks in the context of state security.
During the conversation, experts discussed the possibilities and conditions for limiting the operation of foreign platforms, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The main question is whether this affects national security, whether it affects the way Russian society works. If some things turn out to be destructive and the platform continues to support them, does not restrict them as required by Russian law, if suddenly the state says that we have serious reasons to believe that your platform is being used for subversive actions, and if the platform does not comply, the state There is every right to limit the activities of this platform. Or fine it, introduce some kind of tax,” says Professor Andrei Bezrukov, associate professor of the Department of Applied Analysis of International Problems at MGIMO.
Maxim Suchkov, director of the Center for Advanced American Studies at the IMI MGIMO Institute of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Foreign Ministry, agreed with the opinion of his colleague and said that the supervisory authorities managed to find a common language with the TikTok platform.
“I think these are correctly formulated key conditions that apply to any application - this is the degree of real or potential threat to national security and the degree of their cooperation with the Russian regulator.
By the way, we can say that as a result of Saturday’s events, up to 38% of the content was removed from TikTok at the request of supervisory authorities. That is, as long as they behave as cooperatively as possible, because this may be a condition for continuing their work in the market,” he said.
