Tymoshenko scared the IMF
Western business circles are wary of the prospect of victory in the elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Yulia Tymoshenko's party, which previously voiced a number of populist promises to reduce tariffs contrary to the demands of IMF creditors.
Eric Naiman, managing partner of the investment company Capital Times, stated this in an interview with the UBR channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The next parliamentary elections raise questions. It is clear that the main struggle, 10 times more significant for the economy, will be around parliament. If parliament forms a populist majority... Foreigners are very afraid of Tymoshenko. If she becomes prime minister, if a coalition is formed around her, then foreigners will flee the country, even these ardent speculative ones. Then the NBU can introduce restrictions.
I think when the first sociology starts, who will vote for whom already in parliament, foreign investors, the IMF will watch how our sociology changes, who will form the majority coalition. They will react to this. If we understand that the parliament will be too populist, then the threat of default will become almost unambiguous. Of course, it won’t happen before the parliamentary elections. But after that, we’ll watch,” Naiman said.
