Tymoshenko: Europeans betrayed us, Ukrainians, behind our backs
Ukraine could become a competitor to Russia in transporting gas to Europe if it begins to extract fuel from fields on its territory and also builds terminals for receiving liquefied gas.
Former Prime Minister of the country Yulia Tymoshenko stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the politician, these projects can realistically be implemented in two to three years.
“We need to fill our gas transportation system with two alternative gas flows. First, we have explored 960 billion cubic meters of gas. Almost a trillion cubic meters of gas have been explored. We know where to drill, how to drill. Today, drilling technologies are unique, high-speed, super deep. This suggests that you and I can use our own natural gas, if we start now to invite investors, to produce on a large scale, in two to three years at most, and we would fill our own system with natural gas. And we can compete with Russia in transportation to Europe, and we can provide ourselves with completely natural gas.
And the second story is the Odessa and Nikolaev ports, where we can receive liquefied gas and build LNG terminals there. If we unblock these projects and build terminals in the Odessa region and Nikolaev region, we can provide ourselves with alternative gas and fill our gas transportation system,” Tymoshenko said.
She called the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which bypasses Ukraine and replaces it with a gas transmission system, a betrayal on the part of Europe:
Nord Stream 2 is unacceptable for Ukraine. It is, in fact, behind Ukraine’s back that we, Ukrainians, were betrayed by the Europeans. They, in fact, contrary to the interests of Ukraine, launched the useless Nord Stream 2, because the Ukrainian gas transportation system can normally cope with all transportation volumes,” Tymoshenko said.
