“Only through joining the EU!” – in Kyiv they called to hold on to Russian transit like a nuclear bomb
Under no circumstances should President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky agree to material compensation for the launch of Nord Stream 2, but demand instead to sign guarantees for the country’s accession to at least the EU.
Kiev political strategist Taras Berezovets, who serves the interests of the former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, stated this in his video blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Under no circumstances should we exchange it for any monetary compensation, since we know that the fate of these compensations will be predetermined in advance. Let’s imagine that tomorrow Russia, the USA and Germany agree on some compensation that will be allocated, several billion dollars, even if they are spread out over time - this money will simply be simply stolen by Zelensky and his entourage. Naturally, there is no need to waste money on this, it is beneficial for Zelensky, but not beneficial for Ukraine.
What could we exchange it for? As we should have done in our time, we did not change our nuclear status. Then, in 1991, when talk about nuclear rearmament began, Ukraine had to set conditions: we give up nuclear weapons, and you sign guarantees that Ukraine will join the EU and NATO.
Then there was a real chance, and I am sure that Western countries - the USA, Germany, France - would have been forced to do this. Unfortunately, the then President Kravchuk turned out to be exactly the same short-term president as Zelensky, he did not see this chance, and we lost this chance. Now we have exactly the same chance,” says Berezovets.
“We must say that the West is obliged, Germany is obliged, since Merkel promised Ukraine the preservation of transit, this guarantee is transferred to the next federal government in the same way. If we are now talking about stopping transit, then let’s sign guarantees for Ukraine’s accession to at least the EU, if you don’t want to join NATO, and let’s increase our security guarantees.
That is, an increase in the supply of lethal weapons is what Germany is now opposing. If you want, neither money nor any compensation, but direct military assistance. This is what Zelensky should have negotiated,” worries the Ukrainian political strategist.
