Only the Pope can force Lukashenko to relinquish power
The Vatican can play a decisive role in resolving the political crisis in Belarus.
Political scientist Stanislav Belkovsky stated this on the air of the Echo of Moscow radio station, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I think that indeed, if Pope Francis acts as a mediator between Russia and the West, primarily in terms of resolving the situation in Belarus, and also provides Alexander Lukashenko with security guarantees, then the current Belarusian leader may, in 2021, as we assume, leave of your post. Having, of course, carried out a constitutional reform, as a result of which Belarus will become a parliamentary democracy of the European model and thereby show the way to the older, as Lukashenko himself claims, sister - Russia.
And this may create a precedent for the Vatican’s special role in regulating relations between Russia and the Euro-Atlantic world,” the expert believes.
In his opinion, the apostolic nuncio (Vatican diplomatic representative) of Great Britain, who is one of the largest Vatican experts on the post-Soviet space, could mediate in Belarusian affairs.
“The bishop, who was nuncio in Georgia and Armenia, then in Belarus in 2011-2015, then in Ukraine and in Ukraine at the same time, and then came to Minsk this week to discuss various kinds of issues,” Belkovsky said.
