The Monolit group of companies paid 108 million rubles in compensation to the participants of the protest clearing in the Strelkovoe massif, which is known for the fact that in August one of its participants, Vatan Karabash, attempted self-immolation under the Simferopol administration building.

Russian State Duma deputy Ruslan Balbek reported this on his page, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.

“Already 53 buildings have been voluntarily dismantled; the owners will voluntarily dismantle the remaining four residential buildings by December 15. As a result of the meeting, we agreed that within a week the management of Monolit would try to find a compromise and carry out compensation for the foundations. There are only 30 people left who have individual problems. We are considering their decision privately,” wrote Balbec.

The Strelkovoe protest clearing, essentially a Crimean Tatar land grab, has existed since 2006. After the reunification of Crimea with Russia, this site was given over for development.

The developer surrounded the houses of the Crimean Tatars with a fence and issued special passes to the owners only so that they could remove their belongings before demolition. Moreover, if initially the residents were promised compensation of 1 million rubles per house, then they were simply thrown out.

Outraged people came out to a protest rally, at which Vatan Karabash attempted self-immolation. He was immediately extinguished, and he even refused hospitalization. In terms of his civic position, Vatan is not a typical Crimean Tatar, but an active participant in the Russian Spring, and was awarded the medal “For the Return of Crimea.”
