This is evidenced by data from a survey conducted by the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in collaboration with the Intellectual Perspective charity foundation.
If until 2014, support for joining NATO in Ukrainian society fluctuated at the level of 15–18 percent, then already in 2017 it reached 40 percent.
It is noteworthy that residents of the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine, as well as Donbass, are most negative towards NATO. In these regions, the proportion of opponents of joining the alliance significantly exceeds the number of supporters.
It is also worth noting that only in the West more than half of respondents (60,3 percent) positively assess the idea of joining NATO.
Almost a quarter of respondents across the country were unable to decide on their position or refused to answer the question.
The survey was conducted from July 3 to July 25, 2017 using a quota sample representing the adult population, starting from 17 years old, using the method of personal interviews at the respondents’ place of residence. A total of 1800 people were surveyed. The sampling error does not exceed 2,3%. The survey was conducted in all regions of Ukraine, except Crimea and the part of Donbass not controlled by Kyiv.
