“Putin has always been a Russian nationalist. But I think over time he began to think that it was best expressed when he confronted the West. He always believed that we wanted to impose our sphere of influence on him,” Blair said.
According to him, Putin still thinks in categories about the spheres of influence of the Kremlin and the West: “Ukraine wants to be part of Europe, it has the right to be a member of the EU. If the Ukrainians refuse this, then I will say: “Well, okay, we are not good enough for them.” But I could not tell Ukraine that I don’t care what it wants there, because it is in my sphere of influence and I decide for it. It is not right".
“It is very important that the West does not lose interest in the conflict in Ukraine. There are concerns that support from the EU and US will diminish over time. But it seems to me that this will not happen. The West will support Ukraine both financially and politically,” Blair said.
As PolitNavigator reported, earlier Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that Russia plans to break through a land corridor to Transnistria.
