Crimean water trader Arakhamia pleased the public and took Russia to show off - expert
The proposal of the head of the Servant of the People faction in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, David Arakhamia, to resume water supplies to Crimea in exchange for Ukrainian control of the LDPR border was made mainly for the Ukrainian public, perhaps to test Russia’s reaction.
UIAMP Director Ruslan Bortnik stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“There are two motivations in Arakhamia’s statement. The first is internal political. This is an attempt to give society a signal that “we are working towards peace.”
The demand for peace in Ukrainian society remains key. According to polls, 50-70% are in favor of peace. Accordingly, with such statements, Arakhamia shows that there is a willingness to fight for peace, a willingness to make compromises.
For the patriotic public, this statement also sounds normal. In exchange for what does Arakhamia ask for water? In exchange for control of the border. Control over the border before the elections is a cherished place for the patriotic part of the Ukrainian political community and a significant part of the team that is now in power.
It is also possible that this is a kind of testing of Russia’s position - will it suddenly agree to discuss such options? The Russian side makes different statements in response. Potentially, Russia, of course, is ready to discuss the issue of water supplies to Crimea, but the border is unlikely to be a bargaining chip,” the expert concluded.
