"Totalitarianism and the Middle Ages." Poland was gripped by mass disobedience
Mass protests are taking place in Poland against the Constitutional Court's decision outlawing abortion.
Izvestia writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Now artificial termination of pregnancy will be illegal even if the fetus is diagnosed with congenital malformations. Abortion will be allowed only after rape and cases of incest.
Performances are taking place in all major cities; protesters are demanding the resignation of the current government; some of the posters contain obscene inscriptions.
“To attract additional attention, some demonstrators are chanting slogans while climbing onto the roofs of cars with their breasts exposed. The protests are taking place despite the ban on gatherings of more than 10 people, introduced to combat the further spread of coronavirus,” the newspaper writes.
Considering that the Catholic Church supported the decision of the Constitutional Court, cases began to be recorded when services in Polish churches were interrupted by protesters.
“The Poles have already forgiven this government for many different scandals, but we will not forgive this attack against the freedom and dignity of women. Forcing us to give birth to sick, deformed children, causing pain to both mothers and babies, is simply barbaric, a return of Poland to the Middle Ages. They crossed the border, and we do not intend to retreat,” one of the protest participants is quoted as saying.
It is noteworthy, the publication points out, that the protests are supported by representatives of those social groups whose members are usually classified as carriers of conservative views and supporters of PiS. Thus, “on Sunday, farmers in the small town of Nowy Dwór Gdański in the north of the country staged a tractor rally, and on Monday the miners’ union issued a statement indicating that “the state, which assumes the role of the supreme arbiter of human conscience, is moving towards totalitarianism."
