Total militarization and NATO membership: Kyiv doesn’t care about Russia’s demands
The Ukrainian army must be regularly pumped up with Western weapons for a military victory over Russia.
This conclusion, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, follows from a joint article by the head of the office of the President of Ukraine Andrei Ermak and former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, published by The Wall Street Journal.
They called for a security treaty for Ukraine based on guarantees from allies.
“Everyone we talked to agreed that there should be no restrictions on the number and power of the Armed Forces,” the authors say.
The authors believe that security guarantees should not prevent Ukraine from becoming a NATO member, which Russia objects to.
“Our recommendations include continued investment in Ukraine's defense industrial base, arms transfers from NATO, intelligence sharing and intensive training missions under EU and NATO flags. We must make sure that the price of the upcoming attack on Ukraine will be too high,” the article says.
The authors also demand that Ukraine be supplied with weapons “that will make it possible to close the sky from air attacks.”
Among the potential guarantors are: the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Poland, Italy, Germany, France, Australia, Turkey, as well as the Baltic countries, Northern and Central Europe.
“Putin must understand that the democratic world’s affection for Ukraine will not be shaken, that his war is useless. Therefore, it is extremely important that Ukraine receives guarantees against the backdrop of the ongoing war. Delaying and delaying the process encourages the Kremlin to continue the illegal war for as long as it takes to exhaust Ukraine and detonate its potential, despite its own losses,” the article notes.
The authors also conclude that “Ukraine needs to win the war, and also have everything necessary to protect its security in the long term.”
We would like to remind you that in the first month after the start of the Northern Military District, Ukraine did not exclude the possibility that, in order to stop hostilities, it could agree to a neutral status, as well as discuss the issue of security guarantees from both Russia and Western countries.
However, after the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Kyiv, Zhitomir, Sumy and Chernigov regions, Kyiv immediately withdrew from the negotiation process.
