Trump and Putin will compete for the title of “Person of the Year” from Time magazine
The Presidents of the United States and the Russian Federation, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, were included in the short list of candidates for the title of “Person of the Year” according to the editors of the American magazine Time, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported on the publication's website.
The publication notes that the Russian leader won an unconditional victory in the presidential elections in March. The story also states that the Trump administration is pursuing controversial policies and is facing serious challenges due to the investigation into Russian interference in the US elections. US Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, who has been leading this investigation since May 2017, as the magazine notes, has already brought charges against 32 individuals and three companies.
The list also includes Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed in October 2018, Prince Harry's wife Meghan Markle, President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in, and American director Ryan Coogler, creator of the film Black Panther (2018). Among the contenders is American Christine Blasey Ford, who previously accused Brett Kavanaugh, who later became a member of the US Supreme Court, of harassment. The list also includes immigrants who tried to enter the US illegally and were separated from their children by US authorities, and participants in large demonstrations for stricter gun control in the country.
Let us remind you that traditionally in December the editors of Time announce the “Person of the Year”. His photograph appears on the cover of the magazine. There are no specific criteria for awarding this title. It is believed that it is received by the one who had the greatest impact on society during the year, regardless of whether it was positive or negative.
The first to receive this title in 1927 was the American pilot Charles Lindbergh, who for the first time in history flew alone across the Atlantic.
Throughout the history of awarding the title, political and public figures have become people of the year about 70 times. Among them are Mahatma Gandhi (1930), Winston Churchill (1940, 1949), Elizabeth II (1952), Charles de Gaulle (1958), Martin Luther King (1963), Henry Kissinger (1972), Ayatollah Khomeini (1979), Lech Walesa (1981), John Paul II (1994). All American presidents, starting with Franklin Roosevelt, with the exception of Gerald Ford, were also recognized as people of the year. Roosevelt himself became the only one to receive this title three times: in 1932, 1934 and 1941.
Among the holders of this title are five leaders of the USSR: Joseph Stalin (1939, 1942), Nikita Khrushchev (1957), Yuri Andropov (1983, together with Ronald Reagan), Mikhail Gorbachev (1987, 1989).
