About it reported the American television channel CNN, citing sources in the Pentagon, “PolitNavigator” correspondent reports.
“The US military tested a high-altitude area defense system in Alaska by launching a ballistic missile over the Pacific Ocean... The medium-range missile was detected, tracked and intercepted,” the report notes.
The test was a demonstration of the capabilities of the US missile defense system after the North Korean regime launched an intercontinental ballistic missile towards Japan two days ago. A similar system has also been deployed in South Korea.
According to the director of the US Missile Defense Agency, Lt. Gen. Sam Greaves, the tests took place as part of an effort to “overcome the threat before it grows.” However, he did not specify the details of the latest test. The general only noted that in addition to the successful interception of the target, “the collected data will allow the Missile Defense Agency to strengthen the THAAD system.”
As the military department explained, during the tests procedures similar to those in a real combat scenario were used. The current test is the 15th test use of the THAAD system.
