Trump wants to deprive the children of the Ukrainian minister of American citizenship
US President Donald Trump plans to sign a decree canceling the right for children of foreigners and illegal migrants to obtain American citizenship on the basis of the fact that they were born in the United States, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He stated this in an interview for the news program “Axios on HBO,” an excerpt from which was published by the Axios portal on Tuesday.
“I was always told that a constitutional amendment was needed. Guess what? Not needed,” Trump said, adding that a presidential decree would suffice. According to the American leader, he is considering such a decree.
“It's a work in progress. This will happen,” he added.
“We are the only country in the world where a person can come, give birth to a child, and the child is essentially a US citizen for 85 years with all the benefits. This is ridiculous. That's funny. This must end,” Trump said.
The right to citizenship by birth is granted by the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution.
Let us recall that the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Vladimir Omelyan found himself at the center of a scandal after the media found out that he arranged for his wife to participate in the American free childbirth program in the United States, with the expectation that his children would receive American citizenship upon birth.
