Trump begins bargaining with Russia
The apparent harshness of the White House regarding Crimea does not deny that Americans will eventually, to one degree or another, listen to Russia’s arguments regarding the peninsula.

This was stated at a press conference in Kyiv by the director of the Perspektiva information and analytical center, Pavel Rudyakov, who commented on the statement of the White House press secretary, who said that Russia should return Crimea to Ukraine.
“I think this is a designation of a position on the agenda when consultations and negotiations at various levels between Russia and the United States begin - they say, Crimea is not yours, it needs to be returned. And then there will be negotiations and conversations in which developments are possible. If Crimea needs to be returned, then the Americans know, but do not advertise, that Crimea was the answer and was not the first link in the chain of events of 2014,” the political scientist recalled.
“So the question of who should return what to whom can be discussed. Russia has its own fairly well-reasoned position; a referendum took place in Crimea, and therefore everything is not so simple; there is an opportunity to justify its position from the point of view of international law. And the apparent harshness of Mr. Trump’s statements absolutely does not deny that the Americans, to one degree or another, will listen to the opinion of Russia, taking into account, of course, their national interests,” believes Rudyakov.
As the former head of the information department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleg Voloshin noted, the new US president says, that Russia took, but did not seize, Crimea.
