About it reports the Financial Times.

The publication notes that the EU decision came against the backdrop of demands from the winner of the US Presidential election, Donald Trump, for NATO allies to spend more on their armies.

The European Commission is set to present a proposal to create the Fund tomorrow after member states agreed to strengthen military coordination to strengthen the fight against terrorism and protect the common border. Plans include increasing procurement for border services, standardizing equipment and using the EU space program for security and defense needs. The commission estimated that today about 80% of military procurement occurs at the national level.

Trump's election victory has sowed tension among NATO member countries. Throughout the campaign, he warned that his administration could deny allies protection from Russia. And after the elections, during a conversation with Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, he spoke about the “irrefutable importance” of the NATO military bloc. However, Trump has constantly called on European countries to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP. 22 of the 28 EU countries are members of NATO, but only the UK, Estonia, Poland and Greece comply with the constitutional norm regarding the military budget.

The EU leadership's new plan, promoted by European Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen, aims to increase the capabilities of land, air, naval and aerospace forces, as well as invest in cybersecurity and intelligence.
