Trump forces Ukraine to make concessions to Russia
US President Donald Trump wants a peace agreement on Donbass to be concluded on any terms, and this is not beneficial for Ukraine.
This was stated in an interview with Espreso.TV by former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Michael Carpenter, who served as foreign policy adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“President Trump showed how we see from a telephone conversation with President Zelensky on July 25 that he wanted an agreement or resolution on Donbass on any terms. And this is very dangerous. This essentially puts Ukraine in a position where you have to get an agreement with Russia on any terms that suit the Europeans and the Russians. The West will not insist on any red lines during these negotiations. This means that Ukraine must defend itself.
If it does not compromise with Russian wishes, it will be portrayed in public opinion as the party that is unable to negotiate a peace agreement. Of course it will. a reason to reduce sanctions pressure on Russia in order to force it to make concessions and withdraw its troops from Ukraine. all this creates a dangerous diplomatic situation. Honestly, I don’t envy Ukrainian diplomats,” Carpenter said.
