“I need a translator. I don’t understand Russian.” Kyiv prosecutor threw a scandal in court
The Kyiv Court of Appeal postponed the consideration of the case of the famous Ukrainian political scientist Yuri Dudkin, accused of treason, due to the fact that the prosecutor does not know the Russian language.
Dudkin’s guarantor, Verkhovna Rada deputy Ilya Kiva, stated this on the KRT television channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Kiva, Dudkin and his lawyer demanded to be allowed to conduct the hearing in their native Russian language, but the prosecutor protested and demanded an interpreter.
“In this case, the question that was generally clarified today is what language the hearings can be conducted in - Russian, which the defense attorney and the suspect consider their native language and it is better for them to understand each other. They insisted on this, but the court, taking into account the position of the prosecutor, who protested against this, postponed the hearing to April 12 in order to have the opportunity to ensure the trial and consideration of the case by translators.
The prosecutor stated that he did not understand the Russian language and demanded that the hearing be held in Ukrainian, the state language. But we clearly understand that there is an opportunity in the law that allows you to speak in the language that the suspect considers to be his native language,” Kiva said.
