A third of Ukrainians have become energy poor
For Ukrainian consumers, the preferential tariff for electricity consumption has been canceled, although millions of citizens are not able to pay the current prices.
Oleg Popenko, head of the Union of Utility Services Consumers, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Never in any country has any housing reform been carried out by raising tariffs at the expense of the population. This did not happen anywhere else - they first created conditions, reduced consumption, carried out modernization, and then raised tariffs.
Almost 30% of consumers in Ukraine paid a tariff of 90 kopecks per kilowatt. These are the people who fit in up to 100 kilowatts. But this is energy poverty at the country level! 30% of people simply cannot afford to use electricity, since they fit up to 100 kilowatts. I specifically looked at these numbers. I have a mother, she is 84 years old, I raised her payments to 100 kilowatts. It is clear that they are looking for an opportunity to cut off finances, but they are not working with Ukrenergo, Energoatom and Centrenergo to figure out where all the money goes.
How did it happen that at the beginning of the year Energoatom sold 400 million kilowatts at a price of 1,20 hryvnia per kilowatt, when we say that on the market it costs 2,40 hryvnia? That is, it turns out that people bought electricity six months in advance and will now sell it at twice the price. And in the end, the entire difference of these speculative movements will fall on consumers, because they will increase us,” the expert said.
