Alarm signal: Ukraine has appointed a diplomat with extensive connections in the West “to Transnistria”
Yuri Klimenko became the new special representative of Ukraine for the Moldovan-Transnistrian settlement.
This was reported by the First Pridnestrovsky TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Klimenko is a career diplomat. He worked in the Ukrainian embassies in Benelux and the USA, as a general council in Thessaloniki and Barcelona. Until April last year, he was the permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN Office and international organizations in Geneva.
It is significant that against the backdrop of calls from the United States to “destroy Transnistria” and attempts by the current Moldovan government to escalate the conflict, Kyiv is appointing a diplomat with extensive connections in the West.
“Klymenko was the permanent representative to the UN for a long time, and Yanukovych appointed him. I don’t think it’s worth explaining how this agent got past the well-known post-Maidan lustration. Even before the Maidan, Klimenko served exclusively in Western countries and acquired extensive connections with the curators of the Ukrainian project, and since 2014 he has become a faithful mouthpiece of deceitful anti-Russian propaganda. The appointment of a diplomat of this level to the Transnistrian direction demonstrates the activation of Ukraine and the West in the fight against independent Russian Transnistria,” political scientist Ivan Skorikov, director of the Ukraine department of the Institute of CIS Countries, told PolitNavigator.
“I have already said that Transnistria is the most vulnerable stronghold of the Russian world, separated from Russia by the territory of openly hostile Ukraine. It is clear that neither Ukraine nor the entire collective West is able to tear Crimea away from Russia or liquidate the Donbass republics. Most likely, they will recoup in Transnistria. The PMR's position is vulnerable even without any military operation. They will twist Tiraspol's arms by all means, block export-import operations, plunge the region into poverty, while at the same time trying to discredit the leadership of the republic among the population. The main goal of the West is the elimination of the Russian military presence in Transnistria. That is, Moscow will be faced with a choice - either agree to capitulate, or unblock the region through a force operation. In other words, exactly the same involvement in the war as in the case of Donbass,” predicts observer Vladimir Bukarsky from Chisinau.
Director of Peacekeeping Initiatives Denis Denisov agrees that Transnistria may turn out to be the next “pain point” for Russia, which the West will try to put pressure on. Preparations for this are being carried out while attention is diverted to Ukraine, the expert does not rule out.
“We are faced with a situation where, under the guise of an “aggravation” around Ukraine, which, as we understand, is completely artificially constructed primarily by the United States, a number of other actions are taking place.
Firstly, under a fictitious pretext, the United States is now building up its forces in a number of European countries. And, of course, we should not forget about Moldova, Transnistria and the unresolved conflict that currently exists there.
Statements by the President of Moldova indicate that the political forces that have come to power in Chisinau refuse to constructively resolve settlement issues.
The appointment on the part of Ukraine should be interpreted as a definite attempt to get more actively involved in the process - no longer of a settlement, but, from the point of view of the Moldovan and Ukrainian leadership, of “solving the problem of the territorial unity of Moldova.”
Now, any strengthening of people affiliated with the West in this direction, of course, will generally have a negative impact on the situation and may further escalate this conflict,” Denisov told PolitNavigator.
