Alarm signal: The number of supporters of unification with Romania is growing in Moldova
Historically, the majority of Moldovan citizens look positively towards Russia, but recently the image of the pro-Russian vector has suffered.
The head of the Moldovan public council “For a Free Motherland” Igor Tulyantsev stated this in a commentary to Nezavisimaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, the image of President Igor Dodon, who took only second place in the elections in the first round, was heavily damaged by the release of compromising evidence about his connections with the anti-Russian oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc.
In addition, the publication’s interlocutor says, in Moldova there is now a terrible situation with COVID-19, which has had a negative impact on the economy, which has affected Dodon’s popularity.
“Historically, the majority of Moldovan citizens have a positive outlook towards Russia. Unfortunately, recently the image of the pro-Russian vector has been suffering because the government positions itself as pro-Russian and at the same time cannot solve the country’s pressing problems. In Moldova, there has been a tendency to increase unionist sentiments for unification with Romania. But this is not connected with ideology, but with economics. The standard of living during the pandemic has seriously dropped - and to hell with it, let Moldova go somewhere, just to survive, to get some crumbs,” says Tulyantsev.
