The first hundred years are difficult: Merkel dashed Ukraine’s hopes of joining the EU
The next ten years will only be spent on developing steps for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union; there is no talk of joining in the coming years.
Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel stated this during a meeting with students of Tbilisi State University named after Ivane Javakhishvili, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Georgia, together with Ukraine, are definitely the countries with the greatest European prospects. Over the next ten years, we will highlight the steps that need to be taken in the future,” she said.
According to Merkel, the EU also cannot make any promises to Georgia.
“You know that the prospect of EU membership for the Western Balkans is currently in process. You also know that very soon the UK will leave the European Union,” she noted.
At the same time, the Federal Chancellor added that based on the above, and taking into account issues of European security, “it is difficult to make a decision, both in the medium and long term.”
Let us recall that earlier PolitNavigator cited the words of US Presidential Adviser on National Security Affairs John Bolton that the issue of joining NATO is in the hands of Ukraine, however many European countries do not expect her there.
