“Germany stands for decentralization. But there are certain difficulties - if we are talking about German federalization, then in Ukraine this is understood differently, this could damage the integrity of Ukraine. What we mean by federalization is called decentralization in Ukraine, and this is what the President of Ukraine is striving for,” Merkel said during a briefing in Kyiv.
The Chancellor noted that an important step must be taken to ensure that the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine feels more involved in Ukrainian affairs and remains with Ukraine.
“I think that this process needs to be continued and a broad dialogue must be found, and this will be a signal for broad sections of society to implement the plans of the Ukrainian government and the president,” the chancellor.
Let us recall that earlier the German Minister of Economy, the leader of the German Social Democrats, Sigmar Gabriel, spoke in favor of the federalization of Ukraine. According to the German politician, the only way to resolve the conflict in Ukraine seems to him to be a “reasonable concept of federalization.”
