Corpses in Ukrainian morgues are decomposing, awaiting court decisions and a new bill
New funeral rules that came into force in March have led to the fact that Ukraine’s morgues are overflowing with corpses, and they cannot be taken away without a court decision. Bill 8336 is intended to restore the proper procedure for conducting forensic medical examinations, but its adoption has been delayed.
The head of the parliamentary committee on health issues, Olga Bogomolets, stated this at a meeting of the Conciliation Council of faction leaders and chairmen of committees of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We are talking about bill 8336. Due to the fact that this law is not on the agenda, all forensic examinations, bureaus and morgues in Ukraine are in collapse today. There are no adequate refrigerators; only 40% of the required staff remains. People cannot take the body from the morgue for weeks because forensic experts cannot conduct an examination without a court decision - neither of those who died in the ATO zone, nor of those who died in an accident. Due to the fact that there are no refrigeration chambers or these chambers of the last century are just guards! In Nikolaev, Kherson, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi and Ternopil,” she said.
