Alexander Turchynov said that the main goal of the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine is “to protect people and prevent casualties among the population.”
“Our security forces are fighting mercenaries of a foreign state, terrorists and criminals who take hostages, kill and torture people who, with weapons in their hands, threaten the territorial integrity and stability in Ukraine,” Turchynov said in a statement published on the Verkhovna Rada website .
He also emphasized that “the operation is not unfolding as quickly as we would like, and is significantly complicated by the fact that terrorist bases are located in populous cities, and they themselves are hiding behind civilians, hiding behind hostages, and firing from apartment buildings.”
Turchynov claims that “during today’s stage of the operation, it was possible to capture all the fortified fire strongholds and terrorist checkpoints around Slavyansk, encircling it.”
“The offensive against terrorists continues. During the operation, the criminals suffered significant losses: many dead, wounded and arrested. Unfortunately, we have information about two dead and seven wounded of our military,” Turchynov said.
He also recalled that the authorities “demand from terrorists, saboteurs, all those who raised arms against our country, to lay down their arms, surrender, and release hostages and administrative buildings.”
“Those who surrender their weapons and are not involved in serious crimes will be amnestied, those who are guilty of murder and torture will be punished,” Turchinov believes.
Let us remind you that today at 4:30 Ukrainian security forces began the assault on Slavyansk. The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced an almost complete “cleaning” of the city, and the SBU announced control over half of the territory. The militia denied this information, as well as information about detained comrades.
As Navigator reported, local residents are blocking military equipment and also demanding that Kyiv stop the anti-terrorist operation.
