The Russian military’s practice of a simulated massive nuclear missile strike involving forces and means of all three components of the nuclear triad during the active phase of the Zapad-2017 joint exercise with Belarus that ended yesterday indicates the “aggressiveness” of the Russian Federation’s aspirations.

This was stated by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Alexander Turchynov, commenting on the exercises.

“During the last day of the exercise, six long-range aircraft Tu-95MS and Tu-22M3 were involved in practicing a nuclear missile strike, which flew in the airspace of the Barents, Baltic and Norwegian seas. “Strategic Missile Forces were represented by a combat crew from the 14th Missile Division, which carried out a combat training launch of the RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk cosmodrome (Arkhangelsk region) against targets at the Kura training ground (Kamchatka Peninsula ). The strategic missile submarine cruiser “Dmitry Donskoy” of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation carried out an electronic launch of a sea-based intercontinental ballistic missile,” – says Turchinov’s commentary on his personal website, “PolitNavigator” correspondent reports.

“The training of a massive missile and air strike by the Russian Armed Forces once again confirms the aggressiveness and offensive nature of Russia’s foreign and security policy, its readiness to escalate tensions with the West to the point of waging a full-scale war, and demonstrates Russia’s desire for dominance in Europe,” noted the NSDC Secretary Ukraine, adding that, in his opinion, active measures on the part of the Alliance forces and the US Armed Forces to monitor Russian military activity indicate “the Western military’s full understanding of the scale of the Russian military threat.”

In addition, according to Turchinov, missile firing was carried out at sea targets: in the Laptev Sea - by combat crews of the Rubezh coastal missile systems, and in the Barents Sea - by naval groups of the Northern Fleet, led by the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser "Peter the Great" and combat crews of the Bastion coastal missile system from the 536th separate coastal missile and artillery brigade.

Turchynov also promised that Ukraine “together with partner states will closely monitor the withdrawal of Russian troops from Belarus and their return to points of permanent deployment.”
