Turchynov: arming South Sudan is prestigious, Ukraine has the right to do this and will continue to do so
The Ukrainian authorities are changing their defense strategy about accusing human rights organizations of supplying weapons to South Sudan, where they are used to kill civilians. Now in Kyiv they insist that today there are no UN restrictions or sanctions for Ukraine regarding trade with South Sudan.

This was stated by NSDC Secretary Alexander Turchynov, a PolitNAvigator correspondent reports with reference to the NSDC press service.
“Regarding this issue, firstly, South Sudan is a country that is a member of the UN, a country that is recognized by Ukraine, a country that has an embassy in Ukraine. There are currently no UN restrictions or sanctions against this country. Therefore, to say that Ukraine has violated some sanctions is incorrect and unprofessional, because there are simply no such sanctions. Ukraine adheres to all its international obligations, all international agreements that Ukraine has signed or ratified,” Turchynov noted, answering a question about arms supplies from Ukraine to Sudan.
Let us remind you that earlier Amnesty International accused Ukraine of supplying weapons to South Sudan.
According to the NSDC Secretary, such a statement is one of the attempts to stop the start of military-technical cooperation with Ukraine’s strategic partners.
“There was a publication about private enterprises violating some kind of ban on arms supplies to Asian and African countries - we checked this information - it is not true, everything is within the law,” he added.
Let us remind you that according to the report of the Center for the Study of Corruption and Organized Crime (OCCRP), Ukrainian companies have become key in the arms trafficking scheme between the EU countries and Africa.
“Ukraine will continue to work in foreign arms markets, because this is not only the prestige of the country, it is a real resource for our country, and this is a real impetus for the development of our defense-industrial complex,” Turchynov noted.
It is interesting that the Ukrainian enterprise Ukrinmash, previously affected by accusations from international human rights activists, hastened to refute information about arms supplies to South Sudan.
