“As soon as it became known that Russian special forces had captured the Council of Ministers and the Supreme Council, the order was immediately given to blockade the buildings and prepare for a forceful release,” he said.
“The internal troops completed the task - they took the perimeter of the building, but after a few hours they themselves were surrounded by pro-Russian citizens. In these conditions, when there were many civilians, it was almost impossible to carry out a force operation,” Turchinov asserts.
“There was a great danger that civilians would die,” he noted, adding that the Kremlin was counting on an invasion under the pretext of protecting civilians, like in the Caucasus.
“This was the trap into which they wanted to drive the Ukrainian authorities... a provocation is created, the local military reacts to it... and as a result of military confrontation in populated regions, civilians are killed. Horrible footage of killed civilians and children. Regular army troops are immediately brought in to defend. The same scenario was prepared for us,” says Turchinov.
According to him, Russia was preparing to launch an invasion of Kyiv from Chernigov, Kharkov from Belgorod, through Taganrog to Mariupol and Zaporozhye, and from Transnistria to Odessa.
That is why, Turchynov claims, the Ukrainian military was ordered to “stand until the last.” “We couldn’t take them out, we needed a month to prepare for defense,” explained the acting commander. president.
“Today the Ukrainian army is ready to repel the aggressor,” Turchynov assured, adding that Russian troops still remain in positions near the borders of Ukraine, and all promises about their withdrawal “remain a lie.”
