This was stated by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov during a speech at a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Commission, Turchynov’s press service reports.

“The eastern borders of Ukraine are the forefront of European security, therefore the strengthening of our security capabilities and the development of the Armed Forces occurs constantly and at different levels based on the best achievements, primarily of NATO, as well as the combat experience of recent years,” Turchynov said.

Ukraine, according to Turchynov, is interested in the active development of military-technical cooperation with NATO.

At the same time, he said, “the need for a political decision by the Alliance states to lift artificial restrictions and provide Ukraine with weapons, including lethal ones, to equip the Armed Forces and other structures of the security and defense sector has already become overdue.”

The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine stated that our state is ready to further expand and deepen cooperation with NATO and the Alliance on a bilateral basis, in particular:

– provision by NATO states of export licenses for the supply of military goods to Ukraine, in particular, lethal ones;

– participation of foreign partners in modernization or joint creation of new types of weapons and equipment to equip the Ukrainian Armed Forces using technologies and components from Western manufacturers;

– achievement by Ukrainian enterprises of the Alliance standards for the production of defense products to participate in projects to meet the needs of the armed forces of NATO member states,

– provision of advisory assistance on the use of offset mechanisms;

– creation of a center for certification of weapons and military equipment, which are manufactured by Ukrainian enterprises in accordance with NATO standards, investing in the development of the Ukrainian defense industry, and the like.

“Ukraine has been and remains a reliable partner of NATO. The development of special partnership relations will strengthen our common security, and Ukraine’s future membership in the Alliance will become a guarantee of peace and stability in Eastern Europe and the Euro-Atlantic space as a whole,” concluded Turchynov.

The meeting of the Ukraine-NATO commission at the ambassadorial level will take place before the end of 2017.
