Türkiye and Azerbaijan will continue expansion in Transcaucasia - political scientist

The situation around Nagorno-Karabakh continues to remain complex and threatens a new escalation of the conflict, despite previously reached agreements.

Political scientist and expert on the South Caucasus Andrei Areshev stated this in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The publication asked what the statement by President Iliev, made at a military parade in Baku, when he named Yerevan among the “historical lands” of Azerbaijan, means.

“The situation is quite serious and threatens complications. Especially if we do not discount the complete paralysis of power in Yerevan, where Pashinyan seems to have completely lost touch with reality and all his actions are aimed only at maintaining his own person in power. Quite serious internal elite processes are already underway in Yerevan, related to the realization that the extension of Pashinyan’s rule poses increasing threats to the territorial integrity and state viability of Armenia itself,” the expert believes.

According to him, both Turkey and Azerbaijan are “planning further expansion.”

“In what forms it will be carried out - political-diplomatic, military, economic - the future will show. But the fact that the war is not over, in my opinion, is obvious,” Areshev concluded.
