Thus, the general director of a large tourism company, Sergei Romashkin, notes that Crimea showed the largest decline in tourist requests - 38% fewer vacationers went here than a year earlier. The smallest drop was in Sochi – 15%.
According to Irina Tyurina, a representative of the Russian Union of Tourism Industry, the demand for the May holidays shows what the coming high season will be like. “It’s essentially a rehearsal for the summer season,” she says.
Among the reasons for the sharp decline in demand for tours to Crimea, experts note the return of Turkey with its higher quality and cheaper product and the weather, which spoiled the beginning of spring.
“For example, in Crimea, spring started very late this season; last year we faced a similar situation in September, when cold temperatures negatively affected demand during the velvet season,” notes Sergei Tolchin, sales director of a large travel company.
Crimean journalist Oleg Kryuchkov notes that the emergence of Turkey is not the main reason for the fall in demand for holidays in Crimea. In his opinion, it was influenced by a whole complex of negative processes occurring on the peninsula.
“I understood that there would be a decline in Crimea in May, but minus 38 percent... It’s difficult to explain with just a drop in prices for tours to Turkey. There is a whole complex of reasons,” the journalist is convinced.
