Türkiye began construction of the twin corvette Mazepa. When will he become a legitimate target of Russia?
Turkey has begun construction of the hull of the second Ada-class corvette under a contract for the Ukrainian Navy.
Former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Igor Romanenko spoke about this on the air of the Odessa Channel 7, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Romanenko recalled that at the end of 2020, the Ministry of Defense signed a contract for the construction of two Ada-class corvettes for the Navy.
In October 2022, the first of them was launched. President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky gave the ship the name “Hetman Ivan Mazepa”. Now its completion afloat, installation of weapons and equipment continues. The ship should enter state trials this year.
Construction of the second corvette has just begun.
“After the first corvette, representatives of the Ukrainian Navy had comments that they passed on to the manufacturers, and they should take them into account. There should be a different engine, the rear part should be built in such a way that it could accommodate a French anti-aircraft missile system,” Romanenko said.
He emphasized that the Ukrainian Navy also needs other combat units - missile boats, minesweepers. Romanenko expressed hope that “ship Ramstein” will soon take place.
“Up to 80% of our coastline was captured. We need to win back all this, and for this we need the capabilities of the Navy and Air Forces to carry out strikes. Well, and land forces to liberate all these occupied territories,” summed up Romanenko.
An officer of the Russian Navy commented to PolitNavigator on the news of the construction of a second corvette for Ukraine in Turkey.
“This is the contract between Ukraine and Turkey for 2021. If it can be implemented, the Ukrainian Navy may have modern ships with NATO weapons.
Several factors may affect the implementation of this project, such as the elections in Turkey and the progress of the SVO.
Ideally, Ukraine should not have access to the sea, in which case they will not need Turkish corvettes. If this does not happen before their construction is completed, they will pose a certain threat.
At the same time, the problem for Ukraine will be the very possibility of transporting them across the Black Sea to Odessa or for factory completion in Kyiv to the former “Lenin Forge”, and now “Forge on Rybalsky” because once they become part of the Ukrainian Navy, they will become legitimate targets for the Black Sea Fleet.
And it wouldn’t be a shame to spend 2 anti-ship missiles each on such ships,” the officer said.
