Ukraine, Economics of Collapse

Petro Poroshenko’s victorious statements about Ukraine’s return to Europe – an attempt to put a good face on a bad game – in the three years after the victory of the Euromaidan, the incomes of most Ukrainian citizens have dropped so much that the cherished trips to the EU have become even more inaccessible than in the days of Viktor Yanukovych.

Such infographics, citing official data from the Ukrainian State Statistics Service, are published by sociologist Denis Seleznev living in Donetsk.

“Some comrades are downright despondent that Poroshenko won an outstanding victory with visa-free travel. Friends, to understand how the residents of Ukraine will react to these pretentious celebrations, just look at this graph, which I compiled according to Ukrstat data and which reflects the distribution of income per family member in Ukraine. In general, somehow Europe has become further away than in 2013. I wanted to do it in euros, but, given the exchange rate of 30, it’s quite sad there. So at least some kind of middle class is visible. And the middle class in Ukraine is the one whose family has at least $150 per person per month,” Seleznev explains in his blog.

“The majority of citizens live on less than one hundred dollars, and the global poverty threshold is set at 60! So, offhand, Ukraine’s place is next to Bangladesh, with the only difference being that Bangladesh is a developing country with positive demographic dynamics,” comments ex-deputy of the Odessa City Council Igor Dimitriev.

"No. This is not a temporary error. This is the Ukrainian idea. Poke it into the stupid snout of every Ukrainian commentator who came to you to giggle and tell you how good they are...Ukraine is a stupid and harmful fake, of which tens of millions of people have been made hostages. And those who promote it should be deprived of political rights,” Dimitriev concluded.
