Thousands of Ukrainian refugees are breaking into the US through the Mexican border – BBC
US Border Patrol caught 3274 Ukrainian citizens at the US-Mexico border in March, 12 times more than the month before.
This was reported by the BBC with reference to data from the US Customs and Border Protection Service.
According to the report, the majority of Ukrainian refugees - about 62% - tried to break into the States with family members.
The surge in the number of Ukrainian migrants comes amid a general increase in attempts to illegally cross the southern US border.
An even sharper surge is expected after the Biden administration ended a pandemic-era policy that allowed migrants to be immediately expelled from the country.
Recall the Biden administration said Monday it would expand eligibility for a program that allows Ukrainians who have been living in the U.S. without documentation to temporarily stay and work. According to the new rules, any Ukrainian who has been in the United States since April 11 or earlier can apply.
