The Russian Federation is allegedly preparing armed provocations before the elections in Ukraine to support its candidate, but at the same time it is futile to rely on international courts due to the status of the water area.

This is stated in the story of the TV channel “Ukraine”, which is owned by the oligarch Rinat Akhmetov and who owns a number of enterprises in Mariupol and Berdyansk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

It is noted that Russia explains its actions in the Sea of Azov by the corresponding agreement recognizing the water area as an internal sea of the two countries, which, according to journalists, Moscow allegedly “imposed” on Ukraine in 2003 after the conflict over the island of Tuzla.

“This significantly limits the actions of Ukrainian border guards and allows the Russians to behave at home at sea,” the story noted.

However, despite the status of the water area as an inland sea, in Ukraine they talk about lost international law in Azov.

“We do not have a clear boundary of the territorial sea. Now I can only use weapons when they take the first step on the coast,” complains the commander of the Ukrainian Navy, Igor Voronchenko.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is confident that the Kremlin is manipulating the agreement, using it to cover up the “actual occupation of the Sea of Azov.”

At the same time, according to military expert Mikhail Zhirokhov, it is futile to rely on international courts.

“They are transferring additional forces along internal river communications in order to sooner or later organize an armed provocation, which will only benefit them, especially in terms of the future presidential campaign, when Russia will have a very serious trump card. And not only Russia, but its candidate, whom it will support in the elections,” the expert said.

Former head of the SBU Valentin Nalyvaichenko believes that Ukraine, with the support of the UN and the International Maritime Organization, should present to Russia a demand to immediately stop economic and military pressure in the region.

"But that's not all. Through the International Organization of the Law of the Sea and Merchant Shipping, a second demand must be made - if the Russian Federation continues to cause us such harm in the seas, and our ports do not work, to exclude Russia from the International Maritime Organization,” Nalyvaichenko said.

According to him, this will bring tens of billions of dollars in losses to the “aggressor.”
