“I have heard more than once that President Poroshenko is afraid of the Azov battalion because they can carry out a coup. And Arsen Avakov maintains his position precisely because of this,” asked host Dmitry Gordon.
“Avakov holds his position because he is a minister from the Popular Front faction, which has 81 deputies. Our faction, together with the BPP, is the basis of the coalition. If there is no coalition, the parliament may be dissolved, a new parliament will be elected in the elections, and the new coalition will appoint a new Minister of Internal Affairs. If the president considers it necessary to dissolve parliament now, let him do it,” Gerashchenko replied.
“That is, Petro Alekseevich Poroshenko is not afraid of Arsen Borisovich Avakov?” – Gordon clarified.
“There is no such concept - afraid or not afraid. There is a concept of political competition. Petro Alekseevich Poroshenko wants to be elected for a second term. Whether this will correspond to the interests of the Popular Front faction or not has not yet been publicly stated. There may be other candidates. For example, Yulia Tymoshenko. She is categorically unacceptable to me. I believe that this is the person who will return Ukraine under the yoke of the Russian Federation, and will be ready to conclude secret pacts with Putin...” said Gerashchenko.
After this, Gordon reminded him of a recent interview in which Gerashchenko said: “Poroshenko knows that Avakov can throw a glass at him, so he will not bring the conflict to such a stage.”
“This is to be understood in such a way that Arsen Borisovich Avakov is a living person, who, if you get angry, he may also not be able to restrain himself. So Mikheil Saakashvili infuriated him with his delusional statements at the well-known reform council with the president. And he is a person, if necessary, he can express his position - both in word and in deed. There’s no need to bring him to this,” said Avakov’s advisor.
Gerashchenko also confirmed the conflict between Poroshenko and Avakov.
“The President of Ukraine Petro Alekseevich Poroshenko would like to completely control all ministers, factions and parliament. This is a natural desire in the conditions of Ukrainian reality... Of course, the president would like to have another person as Minister of Internal Affairs. Who would be as loyal to him as possible. But today we still have democracy. This means that the elected parliament formed a coalition and gave ministers,” Gerashchenko snapped.
