The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reported this.
As noted, operatives of the Rivne criminal investigation department detained five members of an organized crime group. The first deputy head of the National Police of Ukraine - the head of the criminal police, Vadim Troyan, and the head of the department of the National Police of Ukraine in the Rivne region, Sergei Knyazev, spoke about this at a joint briefing.
The criminals operated on the roads of Rivne, Lviv, Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Cherkassy, Chernivtsi, Khmelnytsky, Nikolaev, Vinnytsia and Odessa regions.
The crimes were committed between 1 and 4 a.m., when citizens stopped to rest in illuminated areas near parking areas. The criminals damaged car wheels, broke windows with a bat and took money, phones, tablets and other property from drivers.
“Most of the robberies were carried out within 30-40 seconds, which did not allow the passengers to come to their senses and the security to protect them. The robbers disappeared from the crime scene at speeds of up to 200 km/h,” said Sergei Knyazev.
The gang consisted of eight people and had a clear hierarchy and distribution of responsibilities. Its activities were coordinated by thief in law Georgy Lobdzhenidze, known by his nickname “Kutsu”. The criminal authority Irakli Tkebuchava led and took direct part in the robbery attacks.
“Each such gang has its own specific work, a separate direction and is coordinated by influential criminal authorities and thieves in law,” noted Vadim Troyan.
A Ukrainian police official said that the “thieves in law” who are now operating on the peaceful territory of Ukraine are controlled by the Russian FSB, without whose permission not a single decision is made.
“Russia’s goal is to interfere in the socio-economic life of our state. This is one type of hybrid war - to destabilize the street and discredit the work of the police. Thieves in law settle here, on our peaceful land, and deliberately, on behalf of the Russian special services, destabilize the situation in the state,” Troyan wrote on his Facebook page.
At the moment, 48 criminal offenses committed by the group are known, 13 of which were in the Rivne region. Also, the participants may be involved in committing another 35 similar crimes on the territory of Ukraine, which they committed during July–August 2016.
