A ship with a Ukrainian crew ran aground off the coast of Crimea

A rescue operation was carried out in Crimea to refloat a cargo ship flying the flag of Micronesia. The vessel "River Eregli" was traveling from the Bulgarian port of Burgas to the port of Novorossiysk. The crew consists of 7 people – citizens of Ukraine.

On March 11, while the cargo ship was abeam of the southern tip of the Crimean Peninsula, its main engines failed, the ship lost power, lost speed and began to drift towards the coastal shoals.

Considering the criticality of the situation, the company representing the interests of the shipowner, through the maritime rescue coordination center of the city of Sevastopol, turned to the command of the Black Sea Fleet for help.

The commander of the Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Alexander Vitko, decided to provide assistance, and the sea tug MB-174 was sent to the emergency vessel.

By the time the tugboat arrived in the accident area, the bulk carrier River Eregli touched the ground and ran aground off the southern coast of Crimea near the city of Alupka. Taking into account the situation that arose, a diving vessel VM-154 was additionally sent to the site of rescue operations to inspect the hull and further assess the condition of the dry cargo ship.

The operation to assist the damaged ship was carried out on March 12 during daylight hours.

After the diving specialists of the Black Sea Fleet confirmed that the cargo ship did not receive any holes when touching the ground, MB-174 refloated the River Eregli and towed it to Sevastopol, where the ship was handed over to representatives of the Coast Guard of the Border Service of the FSB of Russia.
