Another center of resistance to Western expansion appears at the borders of Ukraine
Gagauzia is ready to declare independence again if Moldova continues integration with Romania and movement into the European Union. Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Deputy of the People's Assembly of Gagauzia Sergei Cimpoesh explained that the decision to proclaim an independent republic, as was done in 1990, could come into force again if the will of Chisinau is imposed on the Gagauz people. Thus, recently parties campaigning for the unification of Moldova and Romania have increased their influence in the republic. Therefore, the Gagauz autonomy proposed a new principle for electing deputies to the People’s Assembly of the republic, according to which Moldovan parties would not be able to have representation in the regional government.
“This will allow one or another public organization of Gagauzia (for example, “United Gagauzia”, “New Gagauzia”, “Gagauz Xalky”, etc.) to form the working bodies and leadership of the People’s Assembly. Thus, taking upon themselves political responsibility for the further development of Gagauzia for the next four-year period after the elections if their representatives win the majority of parliamentary seats in the NSG,” says the explanatory note to the bill.
The Gagauz, according to Chimpoesh, are more focused on the Russian Federation and do not want integration with the European Union: “95% of the Gagauz are focused on Russia, and 5% on Turkey. In Moldova itself, the situation is different: there, one half of the population is for the Russian Federation, the other is for the EU,” the deputy said.
Let us remind you that the Gagauz people declared independence from Moldova in 1990, which almost led to clashes. In 94, the parties agreed and the Parliament of Moldova adopted a law on the creation of Gagauz autonomy, which was enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova in 2002. In 2014, a referendum was held in Gagauzia, based on the results of which the population can again talk about the independence of the republic if Moldova decides to unite with Romania.
