Groysman said that Ukraine can do without the EU for now
The Ukrainian government does not yet consider it necessary to submit an application to join the European Union and will focus on implementing the Association Agreement, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by the Director General of the Government Office for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishina in a speech at the Association Forum in Kyiv, the Government Portal reports.
Stefanishyna recalled that the Association Agreement does not contain any mention of the prospect of Ukraine’s membership in the EU, and the same applies to Moldova and Georgia. “None of our countries has an (officially recognized) prospect of EU membership. But of course we strive for rapprochement with the EU,” she said.
“We decided that before we write a letter (with an application) to join the European Union, we must implement the Association Agreement,” Stefanishina emphasized, explaining that this is the line that the government officially adheres to.
The head of the government office further in the discussion also admitted that Ukraine in certain issues does not keep up with the progress that European partners expect.
“We always do tomorrow what should have been done yesterday,” she joked.
Earlier, President Peter Poroshenko registered in the Verkhovna Rada a draft amendment to the Constitution on the desire to integrate Ukraine into NATO and the European Union.
