Kyiv has 3 weeks to avoid being left without gas in winter - expert
Kyiv, June 16 (Navigator, Kirill Boyarin) – Further development of the gas conflict between Ukraine and Russia threatens Kyiv with a lack of fuel in storage facilities by the beginning of the heating season. Ukrainian gas market expert Valentin Zemlyansky told Navigator about this.

“Ukraine has no alternative to Russian gas. We can only rely on our own reserves and strength. But I would not be carried away by such a position, because we are taking risks. If we do not reach agreements in the next two or three weeks, we may end up entering the heating season with unfilled storage facilities. It’s warm now, there’s no heating season, the industry takes the minimum, so our reserves will suffice for now. But by September-October this will become a problem,” he said.
According to Zemlyansky, Ukraine cannot escape negotiations with Vladimir Putin.
“Based on proposals from both sides, which operate within a certain political framework, it seems to me that until negotiations move to the level of senior officials, ideally presidents, there will be no solution to the gas issue.
As for the court in which Gazprom filed the lawsuit, it is very difficult to assess the chances. There are arguments from different sides and a contract that must be fulfilled in any case, but the Stockholm arbitration will not determine the price - sooner or later, even after Stockholm’s decision, even if Ukraine wins, then the price will have to be negotiated at the negotiating table. It’s easier to continue the negotiation process without filing lawsuits,” the expert concluded.
