This is stated in the message of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
“The Consular Service Department keeps under control the cases of 214 sailors-citizens of Ukraine, for which the competent authorities of foreign states, in particular Greece, India, Spain, Italy, Libya, Oman, France, Sri Lanka, chose detention as a preventive measure.” , says the document.
In turn, the Assol charity organization, which helps sailors, says that it is almost impossible to give an exact figure. Some detainees try to solve their problems on their own and without contacting consulates, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, trade unions, or specialized organizations.
Once every five years, the international organizations BIMCO and ISF publish data on the labor market in the global merchant fleet. The last Manpower Report was published in 2016.
The report says that in 2015 alone, 69 thousand Ukrainians got jobs on foreign ships. Thus, Ukraine is in the top 6 largest suppliers of labor to global shipowners.
