“We regard such a step by the aggressor state as a continuation of legal discrimination and infringement of the rights of Ukrainian citizens who, due to various circumstances, live or work on the territory of Russia, as well as on the territory of Ukraine occupied by it. In this regard, we urge citizens of Ukraine not to succumb to such provocations and once again warn against traveling to the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry considers the approval by the Russian President of the law, which simplifies the procedure for acquiring Russian citizenship by citizens of Ukraine, “evidence of the aggressor state’s complete disregard for international law and the sovereignty of other states: the Russian authorities have assumed the authority to determine the procedure for renouncing the citizenship of a foreign state, which is the exclusive prerogative national legislation of the state of the corresponding citizenship.”
“Refusal of Ukrainian citizenship in the form of sending a notarized application for renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship to the authorized body of the country of citizenship is void in its essence and content,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the only document certifying the fact of termination of Ukrainian citizenship is the corresponding decree of the President of Ukraine.
Let us remind you that the State Duma of Russia, on July 19, adopted a bill establishing a simplified procedure for obtaining citizenship for Ukrainians.
